DIY Display Case: 3 Important Tips

Whether it’s for your collection of basketballs or a gift for your wife’s important bags, making a display case yourself is certainly an undertaking and you want to have all your hard work turn out right.

Of course, there are plenty of things you want to do properly, here are 3 tips for you.

Material Selection

Wrong material equals wrong display case even before you start.

Every display case is different, still, you want to look into transparency, weight, cost – really think about the specific needs of your display. Acrylic is really light, durable, and less prone to breakage, making it a solid pick for your DIY projects. If you’re on a budget, it’s often the more economical choice. On the other hand, glass, though heavier, often brings a more upscale vibe to your display. It’s a matter of weighing the pros and cons based on what you really want for your showcase.

For example, say you’re putting together a display case for delicate collectibles, acrylic is what you want. It’s durable and easy to work with so that your things stay protected and in clear view. Plus, you’ll have an easier time working with acrylic during the construction process because it’s so lightweight.

Precision in Measurements

From a far from refined appearance to unusable work, you really don’t want to get your measurements wrong because getting those measurements right is how you’ll have your polished final look.

First off, whatever tools you use – tape measure, ruler, etc – get the right ones. Then, double-check all measurements before slicing into any materials so that there’s accuracy down to the last detail. In fact, don’t forget to factor in material thickness so that everything fits together just right during the assembly process.

For example, a rectangular display case in particular means measuring each side with precision if you’re going to have all the components fit seamlessly.

Lighting Considerations

Smart lighting can really amp up your display. It means drawing attention to specific details and just really creating an all-around visually appealing showcase that gets all the compliments.

And you have options just as long as you think about things like color temperature and brightness. Also, you want lighting that doesn’t throw off too much heat, especially if your items are sensitive to temperature changes so maybe toss in some diffusers to nix any harsh reflections for a soft and even illumination.

Take a DIY action figure display case, for instance. LED strips along the inner edges, and you’ll get a subtle, uniform glow that really showcases each figure. Buy yourself some diffusers and there won’t be any unwanted glare that takes away from your display.

There’s no reason why you can’t show off your things and your workmanship! Start with picking the right material, precise measuring, and pretty lights!
