Healthy Habits Every Cat Owner Should Have

Being a pet owner means taking on a big responsibility. It is often portrayed as fun and light-hearted, and while there is truth in that statement, the other side of pet ownership is serious and takes a lot of thought. Cats, alongside dogs, are the most common household pet. Anyone who accepts the commitment to cat ownership should adopt the following habits to maintain their pets’ health and general wellbeing.

Regular Vet Check-Ins

Regular check-ups ensure that your cat is up to date with their vaccinations, is the right weight, and doesn’t have any red flag health issues to address. Without the right defences such as jabs, the animal is vulnerable to grave conditions that could potentially end its life. Vets also ensure proper dental hygiene and can help with any behavioural concerns. Take your feline to the vet at least twice a year.

A Careful and Considered Diet

Pet obesity is a big killer for domestic animals and can lead to a whole host of health-related complications. Getting the right diet in quantity and quality can be a challenge, but not an insurmountable one. Cats may like sweet things, but the best diet for them is a naturally sourced one full of the right vitamins and minerals necessary for bone, skin, and bodily function longevity.

Brands such as Reveal provide fully-considered meal options that nurture your cat and give them exactly what they need. There is a wet food product that avoids grains, which are notoriously bad for triggering cat-based allergies and adverse skin reactions. Choosing a diet like this will ensure any cat in your care has the best option for their well-being.

Grooming Standards

A cat with long fur is a cat that needs a grooming regime. That being said, grooming is about more than just coat maintenance, there are also claws, ears, and eyes to look after too. A professional groomer can identify any skin issues that need resolving, make sure the cat’s claws are not in a sub-par condition, and protect the animal from mats and other uncomfortable things. Book a session at the groomers every few months to stay ahead of any potential problems.

Exercise and Affection

Generally speaking, cats are not the most affectionate domestic addition to a household. However, they do gravitate towards their ‘one’ person, and some breeds like a cuddle here and there. A cat is, by nature, independent and prefers a life of autonomous outgoings, but they still like to have a home and know where they can be safe, nurtured, and fed. They also need the right amount of exercise and playtime to give their brain a boost and stay stimulated. A bored cat is a destructive cat, so make sure there are toys around and schedule playtime on a daily basis.

Cats can be a welcome addition to any home. They are beautiful creatures that don’t require a lot of external input from their chosen humans. However, the responsibility remains to provide a balanced diet and proper medical care to give them the best quality of life available.
