Hard to believe that already a little over a week has passed since Thanksgiving.  In that time, the transition to Christmas seems to have happened in the blink of an eye.  Last Saturday, we put our Christmas tree up and added a few decorations around the house.  We made many of our own ornaments and decorations last year and it was fun to see that the boys wanted to pull them out again this year, and hear them talk about what additions they’d like to craft up for this season.

I haven’t really started my baking yet, although the list is written out.  Over the last couple years I’ve whittled it down to favorites and recipes that are simple.  As much as I love to cook and bake I don’t want to spend the entire holiday season in my apron.

On those days when I don’t feel like baking, but crave the sweet scent of cinnamon, I put a pot of simmer scents on the stove.  Cinnamon sticks, cloves, a few drops of vanilla extract and an orange peel or two go a long way to warm up the house on a cold, wintery day.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend!  Do you have any fun holiday activities planned?  We are going to attempt a Christmas card picture.  I’ve got a couple ideas brewing, just hoping for willing participants.

Simmering Scents

  • Water
  • 2-4 Cinnamon sticks
  • orange peel
  • a few whole cloves
  • Couple drops of vanilla extract

  1. Fill a small saucepan with water and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and add in cinnamon sticks, cloves, orange peels and vanilla. Add more water as needed.
