Whew…the heat is on!  Our summer days are really heating up.  This has meant lots of time in the swimming pool, moving evening runs to early morning and popsicles at snack time.  For my friends Matt, Terra and Max on the farm, it means their days start almost before the sun comes up to avoid working in the heat of the day.  Yesterday, the morning was filled with packing CSA boxes and weeding in the fields.  I managed to get in on the weeding and am slowly learning names of the most common offenders.

This weeks CSA box included…

Variety of herbs (I was excited to get a fragrant bunch of rosemary)

Yukon potatoes

Silverbeet Swiss Chard

Summer Squash

Green Onions

Early Jersey Wakefield Cabbage

Scarlet Nante carrots

Beets

The day we get our CSA box has become a much anticipated event each week.  The boys have been eager to try the new veggies (we are avid kohlrabi fans now) and want to know how we will use each one in our meals.  I love watching them take in the color, textures and flavors.  Although most of the time we keep things pretty simple in how the produce is prepared, we’ve been experimenting with a few new ways of cooking too.

How do you make your kohlrabi? The first time I tried it, I just threw it in tinfoil dinners when we were camping & LOVED it. I could probably roast it for a similar taste – & sometimes I have it raw sliced with apples & lemon juice – but I’m not sure what else to do with it.
Your photography is really pretty by the way.

I’d love to hear more kohlrabi recipes, too.
