Saturday morning I snagged my youngest boy and headed down to the farmers’ market.  We left early, and found ourselves downtown just minutes after the ringing bell that signals the start of the market.  Crowds are thinner at the fall markets.  I suppose cooler mornings and the upswing of football game days and other fall activities leaves folks less time to make the trip.

For myself, I think this is the best time of year to attend.  The produce is the perfect fusion (thanks Heather) of late summer and fall produce.  Tomatoes and peppers mix with potatoes, the return of greens, pumpkins and apples.  We came home with a little bit of everything.  Our haul included fingerling potatoes, arugula, tomatoes, green onions, basil, Jona-Red and Fuji apples, mini pumpkins, eggs, and whole wheat bread.

And because I couldn’t help myself, I snapped a couple more pictures when we got home.  I’m sort of in love with the ‘freckles’ on these eggs.  They are just beautiful.

I love fall at the market (ours closes in a week- it seems too soon) but I actually try and get to the market earlier as it gets closer to the end. I don’t want to miss anything! (and love those eggs- love brown speckled ones!)

Erin, closing in a week?! Oh no! We have about a month yet and I’m already dreading it. Really going to miss all the beautiful produce this winter. Trying to savor it as much as I can!

Farmers Markets are so beautiful this time of year – I can never get enough of all the apples, squashes and pumpkins – your photos capture this so wonderfully!

I cannot get enought of the locally grown potatoes I have been so lucky to come across at our local market- they are absolutely amazing :)

…and those eggs, clearly they were meant to go home with you- with all their freckled cuteness!

Thanks Heather! The potatoes have been wonderful here too! We really love the fingerlings, but have had fun with some purple potatoes too.

To my dismay, my local farmers market has lost many of the vendors who used to bring that fabulous produce we love so much. So glad your market is still coming through for you! I’ll just live through your pictures :)

    Beautiful pictures, Alison. As usual.

Thanks Claire! Sad to hear that your local market lost vendors. Anything to do with the crazy summer weather? I travel about 25 minutes to get to ours, nothing good nearby.

  4. Oh, I think fall is the best time for farmers markets too! Something about the chill in the air and the beautiful fiery orange glow of the pumpkins makes me so happy. Though now i will be sure to look for the freckle-y eggs!

  5. Great pictures! Fall is my favorite time at our local market too!
