It all began with one green onion.  A few years ago, standing in the middle of our first garden, I threw down a few onion seeds.  I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, just knew I wanted to grow something.  With the help of my husband and brother we had torn out a chunk of our backyard, and lovingly planted tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini and last, but not least a couple seed packets for green onions.

Well, we’ve reached that point in the summer that so many of us wait for…the arrival of the tomatoes.  Only a few short months ago, I watched as the fields were carefully prepared for the planting of tomatoes.  Terra told me about how beautiful the fields become in late July as the plants have grown tall and heavy with yellow blossoms and fruit.  She spoke of how all the work tying and trellising would lead to the creation of beautiful tomato arbors.  Listening, I could only imagine.  Here we are, late July, and despite the heat, the tomato plants are producing the long awaited fruit.

Whew…the heat is on!  Our summer days are really heating up.  This has meant lots of time in the swimming pool, moving evening runs to early morning and popsicles at snack time.  For my friends Matt, Terra and Max on the farm, it means their days start almost before the sun comes up to avoid working in the heat of the day.  Yesterday, the morning was filled with packing CSA boxes and weeding in the fields.  I managed to get in on the weeding and am slowly learning names of the most common offenders.

A few images from yesterday’s farm visit…
