As I pulled into the driveway after a 5am spin class this morning, the rise of the garage door slowly revealed a pair of bare feet waiting for me.  A sleepy boy, with his sun-kissed, freckled face smiled and whispered a sweet, ‘good morning’ as I got out of the car to enter the house.  I knew my  intention of sharing a post about our Tuesday cherry picking was about to change, as my early risers had other plans.  Breakfast, snuggling up to talk about ideas for the day that include friends and swimming.

It’s summer.

So, instead of a lovely detailed post about our time amongst the cherry trees yesterday, I offer up an abundance of pictures and a simple recipe for a sour cherry galette.  For the crust, I used the whole wheat pie crust recipe from Erin Alderson’s wonderful, new offering, ‘The Homemade Flour Cookbook’.  Of course you can use whatever your favorite pie crust recipe may be, but the nutty, hearty wheat from Erin’s crust adds to the already rustic quality of this galette.  I served it topped with vanilla bean whipped cream, but it would be equally delicious with vanilla ice cream.  I’m already thinking this might be a great Fourth of July dessert.  Enjoy!

Sooo…..have you ever had one of those weeks?  Where you have it all planned out…workouts, meals, blog posts?  Then one child gets sick, then another and another.  All plans go out the window, and you spend that well planned week making soup, monitoring fevers and watching endless movies snuggled up on the sofa.  Well, that would pretty much sum up the first part of January for us.  At the end of that week full of sickness, my youngest boy had a birthday.  He requested a chocolate layer cake with ‘fluffy, chocolate frosting’.  His request included making the cake, as he saw his brother do last spring.  Of course, I planned to photograph and share it here with all of you.  After a week of fevers, none of that happened.

Chocolate Layer Cake with Chocolate Whipped Frosting

April is birthday month at our house.  2 out of 3 boys will be celebrated for turning a year older. Birthdays at our house have turned into an all out food fest as they have gotten older.  Homemade cinnamon rolls for breakfast, a favorite meal at supper and a special dessert.

For dessert this year, the birthday boy requested a 3 layer cake with lemon curd and whipped cream frosting AND he wanted to make it himself.  I’ll let the pictures do the story telling, but let me just add;   I never realized how much one can concentrate on cracking eggs, how far flour truly can fly and that if making a layer cake was always this fun, I would make them every week.
