Hello!

If you’re still here, thank you for hanging in with me during my summer hiatus.  Life has been full and adventurous over the last few months.  Vacations, trail races, photographing for a cookbook and magazines, along with the everyday hustle of our three boy household meant prioritizing any extra time.  The view away from my laptop became so appealing, that I decided to take a break.  My creative juices were tapped and time away seemed just the way to replenish them and find my direction.

There are some experiences that stay with you long after they are over.  I recently had just that.  About a week and a half ago, I ventured east to New York City for the weekend.  It was my first trip to the Big Apple, and within minutes of arriving, I knew it would not be my last.  While I love the wide open spaces I come from, the vibrancy of the city left me feeling inspired and energized.

What brought me to New York?  Well, I had the privilege to photograph a cookbook by my friend Laura, ‘The Best Homemade Kids Lunches on the Planet’.  She was having a book signing at Barnes & Noble that weekend and graciously invited me to tag along.  We have a second book (!) coming out in just two short weeks, so this was a chance to celebrate that, the beginning of work on a third book and a time for us to collaborate face to face.

Motherhood.

Yesterday, we celebrated our oldest boy’s birthday.  Fourteen years.  Fourteen years of being a mother.

I remember so clearly the day we brought him home from the hospital.  We carefully loaded him in the car seat, and my husband cautiously driving home.  A home, that was no longer ours, but now his too.

Unpacking, we folded and put away gifts in the room that had long awaited his arrival.  The yellow rocker, that my own mother used to rock my brother and I, waited patiently in the corner for a chance with our newest family member.

Hello!  Here we are halfway into January!  I’m happy to say that the month is flying by.  This winter, I promised myself, I would put a good effort into finding ways to get outdoor time in, despite the cold.  Winter and I haven’t been on good terms the last few years.  The cold makes my body ache and lack of sunshine starts to take it’s toll.  The other three seasons of the year I am outside and active, but come winter that takes a down ward turn.  That is, until this year.  I’m happy to say…so far, so good.  Thanks to a run running group and an encouraging friend, I’ve been running our local trails each week.  The crisp, fresh air, beautiful surroundings, and laughter have been invigorating in ways I never expected.  And running in the cold?  Well, it’s all about layers and wearing the right kind of clothes.  I have yet to feel cold.  Earlier this week, I even braved 13 degree temperatures and a ‘feels like’ of 1 degree.  That’s a major accomplishment for this warm weather lover!

Moving on to today’s post…green smoothies.  I’ll be honest, I’m not much of a smoothie drinker.  I need to chew my meals to feel satisfied, but every now and then, I’ll make one.  They especially taste good after a long run, when I’m hungry, but my stomach isn’t quite ready for solids.  There’s this window of opportunity to take in good nutrition (within an hour of finishing your activity) to replenish the stores that have been used.  By packing in nutrient rich foods, like those found in this smoothie, you are helping the body recover.

A couple of weeks ago, as I strolled through the farmers market, it occurred to me that we’ve hit the sweet spot of summer eating.  Vendors booths were overflowing with tomatoes, peppers, onions, potatoes, mixed greens, beets, watermelon, along with a variety of squash and zucchini.  The approach of fall couldn’t be missed as baskets of Gala apples, Golden Delicious and early pumpkins were spotted too.
