A few weeks ago, Cheryl Sternman Rule, of 5 Second Rule, made a commented on a picture I’d posted of Ben holding a toad from our garden, saying… “That is the most amazing picture I have seen in a very long time. And that was a tough sentence for me to write, especially given all of your amazing strawberry photos lately. Is there a section on your site where you discuss your photography? i’d love to learn more about how you do what you do. (Yes, I do recognize that hard work, a keen artistic eye, and innate natural talent play a significant role!)” It got me thinking…why don’t I have a page that talks about photography? It’s a huge part of my days as well as this blog. So, I added one. If you look in the top menu you will now see a link for ‘Photography’. Just a place with a few hints about what I look for and do when I take pictures. Please feel free to comment and ask questions. I could easily talk photography all day long. I was recently asked by the folks over at Easy Canvas to try one of their canvases and share my review. I was excited by the idea as I’ve been wanting to update a few images around the house, especially the kitchen. With all our field trips to local farms for produce and farmer’s markets this year I’ve accumulated a nice file of images. Last Saturday, we all loaded into the van and made the drive from Estes Park down to Boulder for the farmer’s market. This was the day I had been looking forward to the most on our vacation. I had visions of all the pictures I’d take of the vendors and their beautiful produce. It was going to be a photographer’s dream. Well, this photographer’s dream anyway. Except halfway there I realized I had forgotten my camera. How does that happen, you might be wondering. Three excited boys, a husband and my parents waiting as I’m rushing out the door…that’s pretty much the perfect scenario for me to forget something…even my beloved camera. After sulking for a few minutes I realized all was not lost. I had my iPhone. Thank goodness. I decided I would burn up the battery if that is what it took to document the day. So that’s exactly what I did. It was an amazing experience to be in another part of the country and see what their land and climate produces. All local and most of it was organic too. Our haul at the end of the day included Colorado peaches, Rainer Cherries, garlic, beets, arugula, mixed salad greens, green onions, tomatoes, popcorn and sunflower flaxseed bread made with spelt flour (delicious!) We hit the food vendors as well and enjoyed some toasted cherry/vanilla almonds and amazing veggie dumplings from Sister’s Pantry. My next farmer’s market stop…Des Moines in September. Can’t wait! Raw Oatmeal with Fruit

I love oatmeal. Most mornings, my first meal of the day is a bowl of oatmeal topped with fresh fruit, flax seeds, a drizzle of maple syrup and the occasional handful of chopped pecans or almonds. I eat it every season of the year. Except for summer, it’s just too hot. The last thing I feel like is warm cereal for breakfast. After seeing a couple of blogs feature raw oatmeal for breakfast I decided to try it for myself. Not surprising, I loved this version of oats too. Perfect for breakfast in the summer months, topped with juicy, ripe fruit and crunchy almonds. Sometimes I don’t even add the maple syrup, the fruit is just enough sweetness. Make this cereal what you want…mix it up with whatever fruit is in season, whatever sweetener you love. Add a handful of nuts if you like. I usually add chopped almonds or pecans for an extra crunch. Raw Oatmeal and Fruit inspired by the Kitchn and The Little Red House 1/4-1/2 cup old fashioned oats (not quick oats, they just get soggy) Vanilla soy milk or almond milk Ground flax seeds Fresh fruit Handful of chopped nuts Maple syrup, honey, agave Pour oats into a cereal bowl and top with just enough milk to cover them. Allow the oats to soak for a few minutes. Sprinkle on your ground flax. Follow with fresh fruit, chopped nuts and a drizzle of maple syrup or your sweetener of choice. I’ve been eating this most mornings, but it tastes especially good after the early morning fitness camp I’ve been doing this summer.
